Nursing Home Abuse

This form of abuse involves the illegal use of a nursing home resident’s financial assets or personal property. If your loved one has made sudden changes to their will or assigned power of Attorney to someone you don’t know, it can be a sign that they are being financially exploited by a staff member at the nursing home. Indeed, some con artists seek work in nursing homes for the purpose of taking advantage of vulnerable people.
Other signs of financial exploitation include:
-Unexplained credit card purchases
-Unexplained bank withdrawals
-Forged checks
-Missing jewelry or cash

This form of abuse consists of verbal or non-verbal acts that cause psychological anguish and distress. If your loved one is being bullied, threatened, humiliated, or isolated, then they may show signs of depression, anxiety, fearfulness, inhibited speech, withdrawal, or agitation.

If your loved one is forced to engage in sexual acts or contact without their consent, then they are being sexually abused. Sexual abuse in nursing homes happens to men and women, and it is often very hard to detect. Common signs include:
-Unexplained pelvic pain
-Trouble sitting or walking
-Bruising
-Skin irritation in their private parts
-Emotional withdrawal
